Our History

The rich history of Marathon Ventures, Inc. can be traced back to 1915:

1915 - European immigrant, Herman Mirowitz, personifies the American dream and starts roasting and selling peanuts out of his home. Herman’s Nut House is born.  

1940’s - Herman’s nephew, Joe Fishel – a World War II concentration camp survivor, partners with his uncle and ultimately assumes the leadership of the company. Joe expands product line of roasted nuts and obtains product placements in area grocery stores.

1980 - Joe’s son, Norman, assumes leadership of company. Norman is successful in growing company’s retail distribution and expanding into foodservice and private labeling.

1991 - Pear’s Coffee is developed and introduced to the market by Alan Baer & Associates. 

 

1999 - Alan Baer & Associates purchases Herman’s Nut House and consolidates operations at our current location in Omaha, Nebraska.

2003 - The company expands its private label business and retail placements and also pursues certification from American Institute of Baking (AIB).

2004 - Current owners take possession of company, and Marathon Ventures Inc. was formed.   

2005 - Pear’s Gourmet became the brand for all of our consumer direct marketing efforts as well as for the Pear’s Coffee brand.

  PGLogo_120px.jpg Pear's Gourmet e-commerce site and Corporate Gifts program were developed.  

Marathon experienced continued growth of Herman's and Pear's retail brands through expansion of our distributor network.

2006 - The private label division experienced significant growth with two of the top four national retailers.

Marathon’s customer base expands into the club store market with Pear's Gourmet coffee.

Another innovative product, Better Together snack mix was introduced in Summer of 2007.

 

 

2008 - Expanded DSD system to include distribution of national cookie program.

Extended line of seasonal offerings intended to help conventional, club and discount stores capture additional sales.

Introduced a line of delicious glazed nuts including Praline Pecans, Coconut Praline Pecans, Butter Toffee Almonds, Cinnamon Almonds, Butter Toffee Peanuts as well as Butter Toffee Sunflower Kernels.

2009 - DSD program expansion continues with On the Border, Snyder's of Hanover and Bridgford Meat Snacks distribution agreements.  

In March, Marathon Ventures acquired Maggie's Gourmet Popcorn an Omaha-based manufacturer of natural and specialty flavored popcorn snacks.      

                                                                            

2010 - Introduction of La Casa de Botanas (House of Snacks) -- a new line of nuts, candy and snacks designed for the hispanic market but enjoyed by all consumer segments.    

 

 

 

2014 - Sun Kernels rolled out to Club and Grocery Retail markets.  Raw, roasted and salted, and flavored sunflower kernels available in a variety of stand up pouch sizes.
